The UNWOMEN He For She Campaign Animations

Nafuna Africa partnered with UN Women Zimbabwe to create a 1-minute 2D animated video for the global HeForShe campaign, blending urgent gender equality advocacy with accessible storytelling. Under a tight three-week timeline, we integrated characters from our Angry Mwana series to amplify relatability while maintaining the message’s gravity. The video sparked nationwide conversations, becoming a key tool for UN Women’s workshops and social media campaigns, showcasing animation’s power to drive social change.

The Challenge
UN Women Zimbabwe required a concise yet impactful animation to mobilize support for gender equality within a strict three-week timeframe. The project demanded balancing the campaign’s serious themes with an engaging visual approach to resonate across demographics.

Creative Execution
Using 2D animation’s expressive flexibility, we designed symbolic scenes of solidarity, embedding familiar Angry Mwana characters to connect with local audiences. The video distilled complex advocacy goals into 60 seconds through carefully choreographed sequences: a father supporting his daughter’s education, boys challenging gender stereotypes in play, and community figures modeling allyship.

Impact & Legacy
The animation became a cornerstone of UN Women Zimbabwe’s outreach, deployed in:

  • Social media campaigns reaching grassroots communities

  • Conference presentations to policymakers

  • Workshop discussions with educators and NGOs
By aligning our studio’s storytelling strength with a global movement, the project demonstrated how culturally rooted animation can simplify and humanize abstract advocacy goals.
